New Study Shows Rice Helps Fill You Up -- Not Out!

Rice can play an important role in healthy weight management, according to new research by the University of Minnesota presented this week during the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) meeting. The study shows that white or brown rice provides a high level of satisfaction and fullness, which is important for people trying to control calories, while still enjoying their food. Because it is a human study the findings are sufficiently strong to position rice as being part of the solution to our number one health problem, obesity.
The Rice and Satiety research, which was funded by The Rice Foundation, was presented by Dr. Joanne Slavin at an IFT research poster session, and publicized to national media.
Dr. Slavin has been invited to present the research during the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, an annual meeting in October which draws 8,000 health professionals. She is also preparing the research for submission to a scientific journal.
The study adds to the growing body of science that supports rice as an important food in a healthy diet and offers consumers more compelling reasons to choose rice. USA Rice Federation will publicize the study's findings widely among health professionals, media, consumers, and to nutrition policy-makers.

FAS Administrator Suzanne Heinen Addresses RMA Convention Attendees

Suzanne Heinen

SANTA ANA PUEBLO, NM -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) is dedicated to expanding and maintaining open markets for U.S. agricultural products worldwide, said FAS Administrator Suzanne Heinen during this morning's general session of the 113th USA Rice Millers' Association (RMA) Convention. Heinen told attendees that FAS is working to enforce trade agreements and remove barriers to U.S. exports, while modernizing and improving management systems and eliminating waste. The agency works closely with the office of the U.S. Trade Representative to help industry with market access issues, and FAS' global network of agricultural officers is a key source for market intelligence and representation of U.S. export interests. Citing the recent passage of three new free trade agreements as an example of policy work that will benefit U.S. agriculture, Heinen said FAS must continue to monitor, implement and enforce all existing and future agreements to help industry as market access issues arise. "Rice too often is at the top of the list of sensitive products countries identify," Heinen said.

Pet Food Category Offers Potential Growth for Rice Industry

Jim Heim
|
SANTA ANA PUEBLO, NM -- The humanization of pets by their owners offers a tremendous growth market for the U.S. rice industry as pet owners, even during recessionary times, are increasingly purchasing premium and ultra-premium products for their animals, according to Jim Heim, president of business development for Central Garden and Pet Inc. Heim spoke during this morning's general session of the 113th RMA Convention. Noting the $1.8 billion annual U.S. consumer expenditures in the pet category, including $60 billion in food and treats, Heim said that rice is a perfect food for pets because it's nutritious and the least allergenic of all grains. A pet owner who founded a food bank for pets in Napa Valley and advocates for other animal causes, Heim said the growing use of impersonal technologies is driving consumers' desire to connect emotionally, often with their pets. This in turn is spurring demand for the best products for these beloved family members. "The U.S. rice industry has the potential for a 10 percent increase in revenue derived from this $1.8 billion dollar industry," Heim told attendees. "The natural food pet category alone has grown more than 16 percent in the past 6 years." Heim urged the industry to encourage pet food companies to use more rice in their products because consumers want U.S.-grown foods that are healthy and nutritious for their pets. "Rice makes up less than 1 percent of the ingredients in pet foods, but should constitute 10 to 15 percent," he said. Contact: Stacy Fitzgerald-Redd, (703) 236-1458

Dr. Outlaw discusses farm bill legislation.

EAGLE LAKE, TX -- Rice growers and allied industry personnel gathered yesterday at the David R. Wintermann Rice Research Station for the 38th Annual Rice Field Day. Texas A&M AgriLife Research scientists and extension staff conducted tours of the research plots and presented updates on selected projects along with research-based rice-production recommendations.
Following the research tours, USA Rice Federation co-sponsored an evening program where Dr. Joe Outlaw, professor and extension economist with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, gave a farm policy update. In his report Outlaw noted the valuable work of Linda Raun, USA Rice Producers' Group chairwoman, in educating legislators on the farm policy needs of the rice industry.
Participants also heard from Steve Balas, board member of the Lower Colorado River Authority, on the proposed 2013 water management plan.
