University of Arkansas' Siebenmorgan Presents Findings on Research into High Nighttime Temperatures and Impact on Rice
Terry Siebenmorgen
SANTA ANA PUEBLO, NM -- Dr. Terry Siebenmorgen, professor and director of the University of Arkansas Rice Processing Program in Fayetteville, AR, today told attendees of the 113th USA Rice Millers' Association (RMA) Convention that his organization's research beginning in 2004 into the impact of high nighttime temperatures on rice quality and yield shows that higher nighttime temperatures cause a disruption in the packing of the rice starch, leading to higher chalk content, milling quality differentials and lower than normal milling yields.
Siebenmorgan said the university studied six different cultivars, growing rice in a greenhouse and controlling for nighttime temperatures ranging from 64 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit, variable soil types and controlled humidity conditions. The results showed that rice grown in high nighttime temperatures, such as those experienced in the mid-South in 2010, increases chalk and reduces milling quality and head rice yields. The temperature effects also decrease the amylose (starch) and protein content of brown rice. He added that the university continues to explore research into the effects of high nighttime temperatures and how they may affect physiological and functional properties during the grain-filling stage.
Siebenmorgen is a member of USA Rice Federation's Rice Marketability and Competitiveness Task Force, comprised of members representing all segments of the U.S. rice industry and formed earlier last year to address issues facing the marketability and competitiveness of U.S. rice domestically and internationally. A focus of the task force is to identify key characteristics necessary to improve the competitiveness of U.S. long-grain rice among U.S. and foreign customers.

Agricultural Meteorologist Sees Developing El Nino, Gives Balance -of -Summer Outlook for Rice Areas
Joel Widenor
SANTA ANA PUEBLO, NM -- Agricultural meteorologist Joel Widenor, vice president and director of agriculture services for Commodity Weather Group, said there is increasing evidence of a developing El Nino in the Central Pacific, which will mean warmer than normal temperatures, an increased likelihood of storms, and drier or wetter regional weather conditions for much of the nation. Widenor, speaking during the opening general session of the 113th RMA Convention, provided an overview of weather phenomena and discussed their impact on U.S. agricultural crops.
With much of the nation experiencing dry conditions, particularly in major agricultural areas, Widenor said the worst of the heat and dryness will shift to the Northwest and Midwest during July. Dryness will linger in the Northern Delta and rice areas will struggle to break out of a drier than normal pattern, he said. "August will provide better opportunities for rain, but this still won't be a 'wet' pattern," Widenor said. "Rice areas could see a mixed bag, with the best yields likely to come near the Gulf Coast and the worst northward into the mid-Mississippi Valley."
