International Group Tours Texas Rice Organizations

The Raun family and the international delegation at LR Farms.
|
HOUSTON -- A group of 21 agriculture industry representatives from 19 countries this week visited LR Farms, Rice Belt Warehouse and RiceTec Inc., as part of a U.S. State Department-sponsored public diplomacy program. The participants have been in the United States for three weeks to examine U.S. policies and programs related to agricultural trade, food safety, sustainable agriculture, and explore how food commodities are regulated and marketed from farm-to-table. In addition, they explored the subjects of agricultural research and the economic and environmental influences on U.S. trade policy.
The participants yesterday visited LR Farms, where rice producers L.G. and Linda Raun provided a tour of the farm and discussed production practices, sustainability and provided an overview of the U.S. rice industry.

At Rice Belt Warehouse Inc., CEO Dick Ottis led a tour of the facility and discussed the economic outlook for and history of Texas rice production.
The group also visited RiceTec Inc. for review of hybrid rice development and technology.
Paul Cummings, who manages U.S. State Department professional programs at the Institute of International Education, was particularly glad to conclude the group's national tour here in Texas. "We are particularly grateful to the Rauns, Rice Belt, and RiceTec for hosting meetings and sharing their time and expertise with the visitors," he said. "This opportunity to learn about the U.S. rice industry -- everything from development of new varieties to processing and marketing -- was a remarkable and valuable experience for the visitors. And the Texas hospitality will have a lasting effect and encourage future groups to come here and learn about rice."

Mexican Homemakers Complete USA Rice Federation Training
|
 |
|
Contestants display their U.S. rice dishes.
|
MEXICO CITY -- USA Rice Federation recently conducted two cooking contests in coordination with the Government of Mexico for homemakers who participated in prior USA Rice trainings. Each homemaker presented rice dishes -- the recipes were obtained from USA Rice classes and cookbooks.
"I am very excited about this final event. It is like a graduation class," said Laura Salas Aguilar, director of the CEI Alvaro Obregon (an elementary school in Mexico City), where one of the cooking contests was held. "The participants informed me that they have prepared many of the dishes they learned and also others from the brochures and cookbooks they had used during training. I am amazed by the variety of dishes they presented today; they are not only nutritious but the presentations are great."
USA Rice works with Mexican homemakers to teach them about the versatility of U.S.-grown rice. According to a recent USA Rice survey, participants knew only three rice dishes prior to training. After completion of the training, they reported being able to cook 10 rice dishes, which they have begun to prepare at home.
Per capita rice consumption in Mexico is approximately 17 pounds annually. One of USA Rice's primary promotional goals is to increase rice consumption in Mexico. Classes, seminars, cookbooks and cooking contests are some of the ways USA Rice aims to achieve this goal.
