| USA Rice Meets with Louisiana Rice Growers |
USA Rice's Reece Langley talks to growers at today's meeting.
CROWLEY, LA -- USA Rice Federation staff met today with Louisiana rice growers who serve on the boards of state rice organizations to provide an update on USA Rice activities and a forum to ask questions about developments in Washington.
USA Rice VP Government Affairs Reece Langley talked about the challenge of educating new congressional lawmakers about the rice industry before drafting of the 2012 farm bill. Langley told growers that House and Senate Agriculture Committee leaders won't begin working on the legislation until next year and discussed the possibility that the 2008 farm bill could be extended until 2013 or 2014.
USA Rice also held a lunch meeting with several Louisiana mill and merchant members.
USA Rice President and CEO Betsy Ward provided an update on the rice industry's sustainability efforts, including the release of an environmental indicators report showing that growers are producing more rice with fewer resources. Ward added that the financial support of state research programs has been instrumental in efficiency and productivity gains for the rice growers.
"All state research is driven by the desire to produce more rice with fewer resources," she said.
Growers expressed concern about anticipated federal budget cuts that could impact direct payments, discussed ideas for a targeted education campaign focused on the importance of production agriculture, and reviewed agricultural developments within the state.

San Diego WIC staff accepts the donation of Aroma rice cookers.
SAN DIEGO -- Aroma Housewares, America's top-selling rice cooker brand and a USA Rice Federation promotions partner, recently donated 400 rice cookers to the San Diego Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. The cookers, which have a brown rice cooking feature, are given to WIC families to help moms prepare healthy, low-cost meals using brown rice.
Brown rice information and recipes were included along with one-pound bags of brown rice donated by Lundberg Family Farms. WIC staff reported that families who received the cookers are excited and appreciate the ease of preparing brown rice in the cooker.
California is the largest WIC state, providing benefits to its 1.4 million participants. Aroma and USA Rice continue a cross-marketing partnership to promote healthy meals using U.S.-grown rice and rice cookers.
